Editors' ReviewDownload.com staffFebruary 29, 2024Diablo III: Reaper of Souls is an expansion of role-playing game Diablo III. The game takes place immediately after Diablo's death and follows the Nephilim's quest to track down and defeat evil once and for all.ProsAddictive action: Reaper of Souls should have been called Reaper of Clicks. The successful point-and-click combat of Diablo III has made its way into the expansion with the one promise of ensuring more demon slaying and darker thematic gameplay. Blizzard has ensured that you're rewarded for defeating every monster mob with achievements, increased item drop rates, and bounties that keep the game fresh even after you've beaten the campaign. Fine-tuned interface: Blizzard has taken some plays from its other games, like World of Warcraft, and infused it with the classical interface of Diablo II. The result gives players complete focus and control over the events of the game while maintaining awareness of the community. Because of the game's always-on connectivity, you'll always be aware of players trading rare items as well, and will be notified if any of your friends are encountering special bosses. Loot distribution is much more balanced, with each player rewarded with account-bound legendaries and trading allowances within a reasonable amount of time. Embracing darkness: No, that's not a pitch to join evil. Reaper of Souls addresses a major complaint of its vanilla cousin: that its environments and dungeons were just too bright and welcoming to be taken seriously. Reaper of Souls' level design goes back to the game's roots to bring intimidating dungeons with darker, more gothic tones and, of course, new monsters to properly represent the ugliness of hell's inhabitants for your killing pleasure. ConsController support: Diablo III's releases on consoles have demonstrated that the games translate well with a controller. Most PC games come standard with controller support, and we hope that this feature makes its way to the PC one day.Internet connectivity: Having always-on connectivity has not really impacted gameplay, but Diablo has always had a solid single-player experience that should not be tied down by connectivity requirements. We'd love to play this game while on the road or on a flight. Bottom LineThe repetitive, linear experience of Diablo III becomes much more addicting with the expansion's new dungeons and characters. In fact, the main addictive quality of this game is not the tweaks to the combat mechanics but rather how much more rewarding it's become with improved item drops, greater achievements, and added replay factors, thanks to its bounty system. Being on the grind has never felt better.
